"...we should pass over all biographies of 'the good and the great,' while we search carefully the slight records of wretches who died in prison, in Bedlam, or upon the gallows."

  1. I was delighted to have found that Miss Havisham item last week, and included it in a sub I do on Reddit -- and then doubly delighted to see it again here, on my very favorite blog, and thus a particularly welcome affirmation.

  2. Alternate history novels can be quite interesting (I read one by Harry Turtletaub and Richard Dreyfuss (yes, the actor)) but some of them can be silly. One suggested what would happen if the U.S. Civil War had been interrupted by - an alien invasion! Oy.

I would hate to die on board a sinking ship, like the HMCS 'Margaree'; it seems like such a cruel fate. And I like to think that Jenny, the 'Titanic' cat and her kittens made it off the ship before it left its final port. (When I read the headline, I thought, "I know some titanic cats..." But it's not the same thing.)

  3. That Four Horsemen article is written by an anti-Semitic right winger.

  4. The Pakistani Navy were between a rock and hard place in 1971 - admit either that their submarine was destroyed by the brilliance of their sworn enemies, or admit that it blew up due to mechanical incompetence.
