It was a mistake that cost these two dearly. I would like to hear from sea-rescue or medical experts if a person can stay alive for two days bobbing in water with a life jacket? I think so. In which case it is likely that they drifted a long way out (beyond the rescue team's reach) and became despondent, sick, maybe dehydrated or delirious and decided to just sink. I've read about this case before and the suicide angle was an unsubstantiated and cruel attempt by the company to avoid legal responsibility for their professional negligence towards clients. The dive operator didn't report the couple missing for two days.
