They later ended up in Australia in the 1850s - 1860s. Great to have this story shared to add to the history of the area, thank you. This reminds me of the 1826 Shrigley abduction (there's a book about the case), although the kidnapper's motives were more financially mercenary than unhealthily besotted. That case also generated large amounts of publicity and it's possible that Carden had heard about it. Some men felt entitled and emboldened enough in their patriarchal societies to terrorize women who - as in this case - clearly wanted nothing to do with them, and were sympathized with in the courts and the court of public opinion for their unstable behaviors. lipskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15239986584175865029noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493712084606110971.post-47397987144723341322018-05-08T21:15:42.037-07:002018-05-08T21:15:42.037-07:00I'd not heard of the film. I do feel strongly for poor Miss Gough. The victim in a crime is often victimised by the public, which is vastly unfair.

Does this strike you in part - especially the actual attempt at kidnapping - as if it could have come from the Ireland or the Scottish Borders of three or four hundred years before?John Bellenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10946140614088069665noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493712084606110971.post-57406493070240169712018-05-07T15:49:08.368-07:002018-05-07T15:49:08.368-07:00Youre very welcome happy to help out a fellow twit...Youre very welcome happy to help out a fellow twitterer and strange stories afficinado. :)Shttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12209551456725339492noreply@blogger.com
