He was of Macedonian Roma descent and some Cornish gypsies had asked him for help with the Thomas's. Alice was ok to them, she spoke to them, bought their goods and helped out by letting them pass through their land on the travels. William wasn't as nice and ordered them off. Grandad interceded and all was ok. Then Mrs Thomas died of poisoning. The Roma has no doubt who killed her and shunned William Thomas and never crosses his land again. When grandad saw Thomas, he used to make the sign of the Cross and carry evil eye amulets.
Oh..and what the postmistress said...it's true, grandad was one of the people she spoke to.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05211720851091000799noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493712084606110971.post-61297723996546734712016-01-06T09:32:54.268-08:002016-01-06T09:32:54.268-08:00The big assumption that always strikes me with thi...The big assumption that always strikes me with this particular case is that the arsenic, if it was in the sandwiches, came from the weed-killer, which contained the bluish purple dye. There would have been other sources of arsenic available. For instance, there are a number of documented cases where arsenic was extracted from fly papers.
The use of the weed-killer to 'prove' the sandwiches were not poisoned was a very clever defence move but only actually showed the weed-killer was not in the sandwiches.
Superb blog by the way - only just discovered it and it is very well written. _patterning_https://www.blogger.com/profile/09456089728615462872noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493712084606110971.post-11863488779864620962016-01-06T06:02:30.577-08:002016-01-06T06:02:30.577-08:00"I may have to research the link between brut..."I may have to research the link between brutal murders and awful cuisine..."

Or suicide made to look like murder.busterggihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02146221182670363053noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493712084606110971.post-38329444100417749062016-01-05T09:35:09.303-08:002016-01-05T09:35:09.303-08:00Makes me wonder what dish Judas brought to the Las...Makes me wonder what dish Judas brought to the Last Supper...John Bellenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10946140614088069665noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493712084606110971.post-86133253914364547602016-01-05T04:53:04.041-08:002016-01-05T04:53:04.041-08:00It reminds me of the famous "warmed-over mutt...It reminds me of the famous "warmed-over mutton" breakfast at Lizzie Borden's house...I may have to research the link between brutal murders and awful cuisine...Undinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16214242522330278662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493712084606110971.post-43273217017272522692016-01-04T19:11:49.156-08:002016-01-04T19:11:49.156-08:00No, no - it would be perfectly alright if you wash...No, no - it would be perfectly alright if you washed them down with some bananas. People, if they recognized my power, would respect me more--and fear me more.' Poison is, therefore, frequently the weapon of quiet, furtive people; or small, inoffensive-appearing persons; of meek-looking women..."Undinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16214242522330278662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493712084606110971.post-6810385621507990912016-01-04T17:58:14.127-08:002016-01-04T17:58:14.127-08:00My first thought was, "Who wouldn't feel ...My first thought was, "Who wouldn't feel deathly ill after trying to eat that?"Undinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16214242522330278662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493712084606110971.post-39416314084480968242016-01-04T17:27:41.822-08:002016-01-04T17:27:41.822-08:00.."Canned salmon & salad dressing sandwic....."Canned salmon & salad dressing sandwiches..??" .., yuck.., sounds guaranteed to induce some type of decidedly unpleasant reaction.., but, to each his own..Mourning Gloryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17590985667319268913noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493712084606110971.post-46363527889560485862016-01-04T13:54:25.206-08:002016-01-04T13:54:25.206-08:00I have to agree with John. I think that if William Thomas was a killer, he would have tried to profit by his deed somehow - re-marrying at the least. I think Annie Hearn was one of those people who crop up in history who simply like doing away with others now and then. She may have felt that it gave her a secret power; she could clandestinely laugh at all those who pitied her, who looked down on her - and maybe invite them for a picnic some time.John Bellenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10946140614088069665noreply@blogger.com
